Why Pickleball Works for Everyone
New to Pickleball?

Here’s What You Need to Know
Pickleball is a fast-paced paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis. Played on a smaller court with a solid paddle and lightweight plastic ball, it’s easy to learn, gentle on the joints and naturally social thanks to its doubles format. Most beginners can enjoy a proper rally in their first session and feel confident within weeks.
Why Pickleball
Works for Everyone
- Easy to learn, most beginners are rallying and enjoying the game within their first session
- Social by nature, always played in doubles, so every game involves four people and a conversation
- Gentle on joints: the smaller court and slower ball make it accessible across a wide age range
- Full-body workout: Quick lateral movement improves cardiovascular fitness, coordination, and reflexes
- Suitable for all ages and abilities: Played by complete beginners and experienced competitors at the same club
- No equipment needed to start: Pickleball paddles and balls are available to hire on-site

Pickleball in a Setting No Other
Birmingham Venue Can Match
For pickleball in Birmingham, Edgbaston Priory offers a relaxed place to play within a wider sports club setting. The club brings together pickleball, tennis, padel, squash, swimming, fitness facilities, a clubhouse, bar, spa and regular social events, all in one place.

Alongside the courts, members have access to tennis, padel, squash, swimming, fitness facilities, a clubhouse, bar, spa, and a year-round calendar of social events, all within one club in the heart of Birmingham.
Padel or Pickleball? Here’s the Difference
Both padel and pickleball are fast-growing racket sports that are easy to pick up, social by nature, and played here at Edgbaston Priory. But they are very different games, and many of our members end up loving both.
- Court
Padel is played on an enclosed glass-walled court where walls are part of the game. Pickleball is played on an open court, similar in format to a small tennis court.
- Pace
Padel tends to be faster-paced with longer rallies due to the walls. Pickleball is more tactical, with a unique ‘kitchen’ non-volley zone near the net.
- Ball
Padel uses a pressurised ball similar to a tennis ball. Pickleball uses a lightweight perforated plastic ball.
- Learning curve
Both are beginner-friendly. Pickleball is widely considered one of the easiest racket sports to pick up from zero.

Training that gets results
I joined the Club to explore squash, swimming and gym sessions to get fitter. Israar helped me build confidence with free weights, always working at my pace. In 4 months, we’ve achieved amazing results and I’ve lost 6kg.

Simply exceptional
My parents met in the Priory bar in 1958 and our family has been members since 1875, now into the sixth generation. We benefit from the foresight of those who shaped the club over 150 years, making it an oasis in Edgbaston. No other city in Britain matches what we have here.

Stunning grounds, top tennis
I think it is a wonderful place to be a member. It is a unique club, it’s undoubtedly the best club outside of Wimbledon. It is the most beautiful tennis clubs in the country, the grounds are here are stunning. This place has done a great deal for the game of lawn tennis.
