This summer marks a special anniversary at the Edgbaston Priory Club as we celebrate 43 years since one of tennis’ greatest icons, Billie Jean King, lifted the Birmingham title on our grass courts.
In 1983, King, already a trailblazer and global superstar, added her name to the Birmingham honours board, showcasing the skill, determination and competitive spirit that defined her extraordinary career. Her victory at Edgbaston Priory Club further cemented the tournament’s reputation as a prestigious and fiercely contested event on the women’s tennis calendar.
A Champion Beyond the Court
By the time she arrived in Birmingham, Billie Jean King was far more than just a tennis player. A multiple Grand Slam champion and former world No.1, she had already transformed the sport through her achievements and advocacy. From her historic “Battle of the Sexes” victory in 1973 to her role in founding the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), King had become a leading figure in the fight for equality in sport.
Her appearance at Birmingham brought global attention to the tournament and the club. Fans were treated not only to her trademark aggressive style of play and tactical brilliance, but also to the charisma and professionalism that inspired generations of players.
