WHAT A FANTASTIC SUPER SUNDAY!
As a new event, it’s been fantastic to welcome both men and women to the new home of the 125 Lexus Birmingham Open. It’s created an amazing atmosphere around the grounds and it’s incredible to see so much tennis played on our courts. We’re proud to be the first week of the grass court season!
With five matches, our finals day was action packed – we had three finals which gave us our three title winners!
GREET MINNEN IS THE LEXUS BIRMINGHAM OPEN LADIES’ CHAMPION
Only hours after beating Masarova in a rain-delayed semi-final, Greet Minnen entered Centre Court against Linda Fruhvirtova. Minnen smashed Fruhvirtova 6-2, 6-1, this title becoming her first on grass.
“It’s been a wonderful tournament, it hasn’t been an easy few years and to win a final here on the grass is the best I could hope for!”.
OTTO VIRTANEN IS THE LEXUS BIRMINGHAM OPEN MEN’S CHAMPION
With a strong and confident performance on the grass, Virtanen beat Colton Smith 6-4, 6-4. The Gentlemen’s Midlands County Trophy, first awarded in 1881, has been presented to our men’s champion.
“There’s not many grass courts in Finland but I’ve always liked the surface and now it just feels great to win!”.
DOUMBIA AND DEMOLINER ARE THE LEXUS BIRMINGHAM OPEN MEN’S DOUBLES CHAMPIONS
Their teamwork and consistency proved unbeatable throughout the tournament, securing them a well-deserved victory!
What a tournament! We hope you all had a great time, rain or shine. We’ll see you next year…
