We had some great battles on court today for our second round matches and the sun came out too!
Sadly Heather Watson had to pull out of her doubles match earlier due to an injury, so Zhang and Kato had a walk over. Putintseva seemed to cruise through her match against Kalinina, beating her 6.3/6.0. Our eighth seed Bouzkova lost to Shnaider 7.6/6.3. The match of the day was Britain’s No. 2 Harriet Dart and second seed Barbora Krejcikova. Dart had a fantastic home crowd but unfortunately couldn’t beat Krejcikova. The final match we saw today was Dolehide v Mertens. Unfortunately Mertens had to retire due to an injury.
Looking ahead….
Quarter Finals are here.
This is the stage in the draw where everyone has won two matches and feels confident on the court.
Italian tennis continues to thrive and Cocciaretto is playing very confident tennis. She has had two very impressive wins so far this week and is looking very strong in the draw. Shnaider continued her good run today and beat our number eighth seed.
Potapova is dynamic, intense and plays so aggressively. If she can keep her composure she is a threat in all draws. She has experience on the grass and her aggressive game style is effective. Krejcikova will bring lots of experience and will use her strong early hitting to effect. Krejcikova has won numerous doubles grand slams so we will expect more net play from her to break up Potapova’s rhythm.
Putintseva is always a dark horse in the draws – she plays aggressive and with variety. Dolehide continues her great run through from qualifying, but does she have the power to out hit Putintseva?
Our last match of the match of the day. Tomljanovic is coming back from injury but plays her best tennis on big courts and in big matches. Fernandez is obviously a familiar face for everyone. Both play quite similar with aggressive baselines from the back, and both prefer their backhands. Who will break who first?
