EDGBASTON PRIORY CLUB HOLDS COURT WITH FORMER CHIEF EXECUTIVE OF WIMBLEDON

10th December 2009

Chris Corringe CBE, Micky Fallows Chairman Edgbaston Priory, Robert Bray Chief Executive Edgbaston PrioryMr Chris Gorringe, CBE, former Chief Executive of The All England Lawn Tennis Club, gave an intriguing glimpse into life behind the scenes at Wimbledon when he joined members at Edgbaston Priory Club for lunch on Thursday 10th December.

During his twenty-six years in charge of the world’s most famous tennis championships, Chris Gorringe oversaw the transformation of Wimbledon into one of the biggest commercial sporting events in the world.  His tenure spanned the reigns of Borg to Federer and saw him handling everything from the McEnroe tantrums to the 2012 Olympic bid.

As well as sharing some fascinating insights into one of our best-loved institutions with members, Mr Gorringe also signed copies of his new book, Holding Court, published by Random House.

Edgbaston Priory Club launched the lunch club this year and it is proving very popular with members, with events selling out within days of their announcement.

As Edgbaston Priory Club hosts the AEGON Classic, where many of the female tennis players fine tune their grass court skills prior to Wimbledon, the lunch with Chris Gorringe was of particular interest to members.

Robert Bray, Chief Executive of Edgbaston Priory Club explains:

“We were delighted to host this lunch with Chris Gorringe, whose vision has successfully steered Wimbledon into the 21st century whilst retaining its essential English quality.  To hear about the development of modern tennis from the man at the centre of it for the last quarter of a century was simply enthralling for members.”
